March 2010 Building Update

February 2010

Dear Fellow Builders:

Rain, rain. This continued to delay completion of the brick on the road side of the building, because the heavy rains caused problems with getting equipment and materials in even after the rain stopped, sometimes for several days. Fortunately, this work has resumed, and I hope that we will soon see it completed and the mortar wash put on.

The inside is taking shape now, and it is going to be beautiful. We continue to be confident that we will be worshipping there by late summer. Thanks be to God!

Christchurch Monthly Report February 2010

As we enter the eleventh month of construction on the Campus for Christchurch, a lot of progress has been made since the last monthly report. On the interior, many of the finishes have begun. The drywall subcontractor has finished all of the drywall, and the painters have primed all of the walls. The trim carpenters have installed most of the trim and doors in the education wing and will begin working in the Parish Hall and Sanctuary soon. The painters are following closely behind the trim carpenters and are caulking and painting the drywall and trim. Also, the tile installers have started near the Kitchen and are working through the remainder of the building.

On the exterior of the building, the brickwork has been held up by the recent cold weather and rain, as the mortar will freeze and not bond securely if installed when temperatures are too low. With the recent change in the weather, they are back working to complete the front of the Sanctuary and have completed
approximately half of the brick walls surrounding the service yard and toddler play yard. This work should be completed in the next few weeks, and the mortar wash of the entire building will begin soon after.

This portion of construction starts to be very exciting again as finished materials are installed. In the beginning of a project, the framing allows the shape and structure of a building to be seen, which is often a very inspiring time. As the rough-in stage advances, there is not much visual progress as wires, plumbing pipes, and ductwork is installed, and the pace seems to dramatically decrease. As the building continues to proceed though, the apparent pace again increases as the final finishes are installed. As we move through this stage, I hope that you will find enjoyment in watching the progress as we move closer towards the completion of this Church.

We have been able to pick up a few days in our schedule this month as we continue to make good progress. Although we are still a few weeks behind, the last few weeks have again been a large step in getting the schedule back in the right direction. Also, we remain very close to our expected budget on this project thus far. Although there have been some minor changes that have affected the overall
cost of the project, there still are no major problems that would be a cause for concern in regards to the budget.

The webcam is back up, and I invite everyone to join us to follow along with our progress. Thank you again for this great opportunity to build and be a part of such a wonderful Church.

Sincerely,
John H. Foshee

January 2010

Dear Fellow Builders:

Rain, rain, rain. It has been good to see some clear days, and Foshee Builders crews have been making the most of them. I drove by on New Year's Eve afternoon, when many of us were probably preparing for the night's festivities, and saw brick laying going on at full speed. It's great to see the dedication that is moving this project forward by all concerned.

As you will see from John Foshee's attached report, much has been accomplished inside the building, and with the installation of heating, the trim work will begin.

2010 will truly be a Happy New Year for Christchurch.

Christchurch Monthly Report January 2010

Since construction began on the Campus for Christchurch ten months ago, progress continues to remain steadfast. In the interior of the building, all of the drywall has been hung, and the crews are mudding and finishing all of the joints. While this work is nearing completion, the painters have started to add the first primer coat of paint onto the newly finished drywall throughout much of the building. Also, the trim carpenters are fabricating the door jambs and setting door units into their final positions.

On the exterior of the building, the brickwork is approximately ninety percent complete, with less than two sides of the Sanctuary remaining to finish. This work should be completed in the next few weeks, and the mortar wash of the entire building will begin. Also, we are trying to take advantage of the drier weather and grade around the building. Although maintaining the grade is a constant struggle with any project, it has been much easier with the recent weather that we have been blessed with.

One major hurdle that has been accomplished this month is the installation of the permanent transformer and a permanent power meter. Our electricians have worked hard in order to realize this goal, which allows for HVAC units to be started up and provide heat to the building. Although the heat will provide a more comfortable work environment, the reason that this is so important is that the HVAC units will maintain a constant temperature and moisture content which will acclimate the building. This allows for all of the beautiful wood trim to be installed without worrying about the wood shrinking and expanding with changes in the weather. Without the HVAC system running, gaps would form between every joint of the trim work.

Our schedule continues to remain consistent, and we continue to make good pro-gress. Although we are still a few weeks behind, this last month has again been a large step in getting the schedule back in the right direction. Also, we remain very close to our expected budget on this project thus far. Although there have been some minor changes that have affected the overall cost of the project, there still are no major problems that would be a cause for concern in regards to the budget.

The webcam is back up, and I invite everyone to join us to follow along with our progress. Thank you again for this great opportunity to build and be a part of such a wonderful Church.

Sincerely,
John H. Foshee

December 2009

Dear Fellow Builders,

What a difference a steeple makes! And a really beautiful one at that. The early morning blessing of the steeple and cross, to the late evening actual erection of the steeple, and finally the later placing of the budded cross on top, November 11 was a most special day in the history of Christchurch. We actually look like a church now.

As we approach the Christmas season now, it is exciting to know that it will be celebrated next year in our beautiful new building. That's an even better vision than sugar plums to have dance in our heads!

Christchurch Monthly Report December 2009

Great progress is taking place on the new Campus for Christchurch as we enter the ninth month of construction. In the Sanctuary, the wood arched jambs are being installed and the drywall subcontractor continues to tape and mud the joints. Throughout the Education Wing of the building, the electricians are completing their final rough in work. The insulation has been installed throughout most of the walls of the building. The drywall subcontractor has completed hanging all of the drywall on the first floor and is beginning the process of taping and finishing the joints. Soon, drywall will be hung upstairs  and the trim work will begin in the areas where the drywall is already completed.

On the exterior of the building, the thin bricks have been installed in the gables and the mortar wash has been completed over top of these thin bricks. The rest of the brickwork is approximately seventy-five percent complete, with only a few more weeks of work remaining. The roofers are finishing the shingles and related flashing work against the gable ends to ensure the building is water tight. Finally, the steeple was installed this past month. While it seemed that everything that could go wrong went wrong with the installation, everyone worked hard to ensure the steeple was successfully installed.

The weather this month was more cooperative than previous months. The site was able to dry out slightly in order to get the grade reestablished around the building. Hopefully, this good weather will continue in the coming weeks in order for us to complete the major exterior portions of the building.

Our schedule continues to remain consistent, and we continue to make good progress. Although we are still a few weeks behind, this last month has been a large step in getting the schedule back in the right direction, as a lot of important work has been started. Also, we remain very close to our expected budget on this project thus far. Although there have been some minor changes that have affected the overall cost of the project, there still are no major problems that would be a cause for concern in regards to the budget.

I invite everyone to join us on the webcam to follow along with our progress. Thank you again for this great opportunity to build and be a part of such a wonderful Church.

November 2009

Dear Fellow Builders:

November will bring big changes in the outside appearance of our church. The steeple is scheduled for installation on November 11, and there will be a dedication ceremony for that great occasion. It will be early, as we must stay out of the way of the workmen. If you don’t make it out for that, drive by later for a look.

Also, November will see the completion of the outside brick and the beautiful mortar wash, so we will begin to see just what our church building will look like from the outside.

Meanwhile, inside construction is full speed ahead, and we are well on the way toward a July move-in. We’ll keep you posted as our exciting journey continues.

Christchurch Monthly Report November 2009

As we enter the eighth month of construction, great progress is taking place on the new Campus for Christchurch. On the interior of the Sanctuary, most of the walls have been insulated and drywall has been hung in place. We are working on taping and finishing the drywall joints in order to start the wood trim work in this area as soon as possible. Throughout the rest of the building, the rough trades are completing their respective work and the insulation and drywall subcontractors are pushing behind them quickly. We are installing insulation and hanging drywall only in the locations that are ready at this point and waiting for the rough trades to wrap up the remaining portions of the building.

On the exterior of the building, the large windows and frames have been in-stalled. The thin bricks are almost completed in the gables and the remaining full bricks are being laid. We still have a few more weeks of brickwork remaining on the exterior though. Also, a portion of the mortar coating has been completed in the gable ends, and the remainder of the mortar coating will be finished closely behind the brickwork. Lastly, the roofers are completing the shingles and related flashing work against the gable ends, thus drying in the entire building.

This month has again been another wet month, with rain occurring enough each week to keep the site extremely wet and muddy. While this slowed down the exterior work on the building, the interior portions of work were able to continue with only minor delays. The site remains extremely wet, and we continue to pump out the water and grade around the building to try and dry up the site.  Hopefully, the weather will cooperate more this coming month in order for us to complete the major exterior portions of the building.

Our schedule continues to remain consistent, and we continue to make good progress. Although we are still a few weeks behind, the beginning of the drywall stage is a large step in getting the schedule back in the right direction.

October 2009

Dear Fellow Builders,

As you can see from John Foshee's Monthly Report, these continuous rains have slowed us down on the roof and the bricks, but this work is progressing, and we are making progress inside.

Speaking of the rains, several people have asked me whether we will be vulnerable to interior damage if lightning should strike the cross which will be atop our steeple. I am happy to pass on this answer from Les Cole:
The steeple is being fabricated with lightning cable that will be connected to and extended to the ground by the electrician.

It is exciting to see the bricks coming up on the front of the building. As you see this, remember that in the end they will be washed with a beautiful off-white color.

Stay tuned!

Christchurch Monthly Report October 2009

After seven months of construction on the new Campus for Christchurch, noticeable progress on the exterior is occurring and giving shape to the overall appearance of this beautiful Church. The rough trades are completing their respective portions of work, and final rough-in inspections are scheduled to occur over the next two weeks. This will allow the insulation and drywall subcontractor to begin hanging and finishing drywall, starting first n the Sanctuary and moving through to the Education Wing. This is an exciting time to see the skeleton of the building being covered up and the interior spaces starting to be defined more clearly.

On the exterior of the building, the roofers are close to wrapping up the shingles and related roof work. The majority of windows and exterior door frames have been installed, and the brick masons have begun work by laying the first few courses of brick around the entire perimeter of the Church. This allows the masons to get their brick above the mud and gives us an opportunity to backfill sand against the building to give better drainage and protection of the brick. The masons are now beginning to lay brick on the front of the education wing and on the gable ends of the building.

The month has been another wet month, with rain occurring almost every day. While this did certainly slow down the exterior work on the building, the interior portions of work were able to continue with only minor delays. The site remains extremely wet, and we are working to grade around the building in order for any additional rain to drain properly.

Our schedule continues to be about the same. We are making good progress, but are still a few weeks behind.

John H. Foshee

September 2009

Dear Fellow Builders,

As you will see from John Foshee's Monthly Report for September, things continue to go smoothly with the building of our new home. Every time I look at the building from the outside, and every time I walk into it, I rejoice over Les Cole's beautiful design and over the Foshee brothers' skillful handling of the construction. We are truly blessed.

The roofing and the laying of the brick exterior may seem slow to some, but I can assure you that it is being done as rapidly as possible  to make sure that it is done right. And, it is being done right.

A major event to look forward to after roofs, windows, and bricks will be the setting of the steeple. We will be giving you advance notice of this very special occasion.

Christchurch Monthly Report September 2009

As we enter the sixth month of construction on the new Campus for Christchurch, most of the “rough-in” work has been completed, and noticeable changes and progress will again start to become apparent. Although there remains a lot of work to be performed by the HVAC, electrical, fire sprinkler, and plumbing  subcontractors before drywall begins on the interior, enough has been completed on the building’s exterior to continue moving forward.

On the exterior of the building, the roofers are close to completing the shingles on the Parish Hall and have begun the remainder of the Education Wing. The brick mason is scheduled to begin work this week on the Parish Hall, and will continue to the other portions of the building. Also, the service yard has been laid out and foundations have begun to be dug. Therefore, concrete will be poured in this area shortly.  All of this work together will make a large impact on the overall character of the building as we move closer to the final exterior appearance of the Church.

I am happy to report this month that we have picked up a few days in our  schedule.  As you may remember, we lost several weeks in the beginning of the project due to the constant rain and flooding while we were working on the foundations. While we are still approximately three weeks behind, I hope to continue gaining a day or two every month through the completion  of the project. Also, we remain very close to our expected budget on this project thus far. There still are no major problems that would be a cause  for concern in regards to the budget.

Overall, the project continues to move forward without major problems, and I hope that this trend will continue as we move forward. I invite everyone to join us on the webcam to follow along with our progress. Thank you again for this great  opportunity to build and be a part of such a wonderful Church.

Sincerely,
John H. Foshee

August 2009

Dear Fellow Builders,

We're moving right along, and our beautiful new home-to-be is taking shape. Below is the Monthly Report from Foshee Builders to keep you advised of our progress.

Now that we are beginning to have more workers inside, as well as all around, the building, we need to ask that no visitors come on the site during working hours unless there is a specific need to do so. If there is a need, please stop in the trailer first, so that someone will know you are there.

Also, the more materials, equipment, tools, etc. we have on the site, the more safety, security, and liability issues we face after hours. So, if you do come out after hours or on weekends, please be very careful at all times, and we especially ask that children not be allowed to run around or play on the site. I'm sure that everyone understands these serious concerns, and I thank you for your cooperation.

Please feel free to give me a call if you have any questions, and I will continue to keep you posted each month on the status of our exciting project.

Christchurch Monthly Report August 2009

After five months of construction on the new Campus for Christchurch, I am happy to report that work is continuing forward rapidly. The major portions of the framework are now complete, and the framers are
dropping back to complete the detailed interior areas of the building. The rough trades are also continuing their work, with the electrician, HVAC subcontractor, plumber, and fire sprinkler subcontractor all making good progress in the interior of the building.

As stated in an earlier report, this is the time in the project where very little change to the exterior is observed. While this has been the case for the last several weeks, we will be starting to make significant headway as we move forward in the next three to four months. The cornice is just beginning this week, the roofing will start shortly, the windows have arrived and will start being installed next week, and the bricks will be installed after the completion of the windows. All of this work together will make a large
impact on the overall character of the building as we move closer to the final exterior appearance of the Church.

I continue to feel good about our schedule and our budget at this point in the project. The weather has not been a big factor in slowing progress lately, as a majority of the work is inside the building and can be
performed in inclement weather. We are still a few weeks behind where our ideal schedule would have us to be, but the rough trades continue making good progress. Their progress does not allow us to fall back any further on the schedule, and hopefully we will be able to gain a little time as we continue work. Also, we are very close to our expected budget on this project thus far. There still remain no major problems that would be a cause for concern in regards to the budget.

Overall, the project is moving forward smoothly, and we are very hopeful that we will continue to have success on making up for lost time. I invite everyone to join us on the webcam to follow along with our progress. Thank you again for this great opportunity to build and be a part of such a wonderful Church.

Dear Fellow Builders,

We may be complaining some about the weather, but as you will see from this Monthly Report from John Foshee, it has been very good for the progress of our building. Things are going smoothly toward a move into our beautiful new home next summer. And, it is a real treat to be able to see the progress in pictures on the Foshees' real-time webcam.  So -- Onward and upward!

Christchurch Monthly Report, July 2009

We are now four months into the construction of the new Campus for Christchurch, and things are moving very smoothly. The major framing is completed in the Sanctuary and the Education Wing is following closely behind, with the installation of rafters over the majority of the building. In the Parish Hall, the walls are nearing completion and the trusses that support the roof are in place. The overall building is now taking shape, and it is truly a beautiful structure.

With the framing portion of work approximately eighty percent complete, the rough trades have a good start in the Sanctuary and on the first floor of the Education Wing. The electrician is running conduit and setting the boxes for outlets and fixtures. The plumber has finished the majority of the plumbing rough-in on the first floor and starting work upstairs. The HVAC subcontractor is working above the side aisles of the Sanctuary, where space is very limited, installing large duct lines. Finally, the fire sprinkler subcontractor has a great start in the Sanctuary installing their piping, with over fifty-percent of the piping completed.

Over the next few weeks, we anticipate the overall framing of the Church to be completed, and the framers making their final passes through the building, ensuring all details are completed and correcting any small problems. Also, the trim carpenter will be on site setting the windows, the brick mason will begin the exterior of the building, and the roofing work will get underway.

I feel confident about our schedule and our budget at this point in the project. We have been very fortunate with the weather lately. Although the heat index has been over 100 degrees everyday for the last week or two, we have been without much rainfall. This has allowed us to gain a week on our schedule, but we are currently still three weeks behind where our ideal schedule would have us to be. There are more upcoming areas that I think we will be able to make up some lost time. Also, we are very close to our expected budget on this project thus far. While there have been minor unanticipated costs and savings throughout the job, there have been no major problems that would be a cause for concern.

Overall, the project is moving forward smoothly, and we are very hopeful that we will continue to have success on making up for lost time. I invite everyone to join us on the webcam to follow along with our progress. Thank you again for this great opportunity to build and be a part of such a wonderful Church.

John H. Foshee

Dear Fellow Builders,

If you haven't driven out Taylor Road past our building site recently, do it! You will see that, despite the problems caused by rain, we are well on our way toward the projected July 2010 move.

Below is a report from our Construction Manager, Foshee Builders, which was distributed at a quarterly construction status meeting held today. We will be keeping you advised each month of the status of the project.

Things are looking great, and we all feel your continuing prayers for our new church's building.

Christchurch Quarterly Report
June 3, 2009

Overall, the Christchurch project is well underway and moving forward rapidly.

Construction started on March 2, 2009, with the laying out of the building and setting batter boards
in place. From there, work on the foundations began. Although major rain storms slowed progress
tremendously, the main Sanctuary slab was poured and finished on April 3, 2009. After the proper
curing time of the Sanctuary slab, the glue laminated trusses arrived on site and erection began on
April 14, 2009. The erection of the trusses and the roof decking was completed in only seven days,
which revealed the main shape and size of the Sanctuary. Work on the Education Wing slab was
ongoing during this same time and was poured and finished on April 23, 2009.

With the main portions of the foundation completed, the framing carpenters were able to start
the process of framing the building. Framing began in the Narthex and has moved forward into the
Sanctuary and into the first floor of the Education Wing over the last month. We are now approxi-
mately ten days away from finishing the framing in the Sanctuary and have completed the first floor
walls and second floor system in the Education Wing. From this point, the framers will complete the
Sanctuary and will begin concentrating on the second floor and roof of the Education Wing and
Parish Hall. The walls have all been laid out on the second floor and are ready to be constructed
soon.

Over the next few weeks, we anticipate moving forward quickly with the framing of the Education Wing and Parish Hall. The rough trades, including the electrician, plumber, HVAC, and Fire Sprinkler subcontractors, should have a good start on installing their respective infrastructure and equipment, some of which have already begun. During this same time, the windows will be set in place, the brick exterior will begin, and the roofing work will get under way.

Also, we are approaching the point in the construction of the Church where everything appears to stand still. While the foundation and framing goes very quickly, the infrastructure and rough trades are tedious and time consuming. Although work will be continuing inside, a “windshield inspection” while driving down Vaughn Road will not reveal major progress. This will be the case for a few months, but things will quickly change after the infrastructure is in place.

Finally, I feel confident about our schedule and our budget at this point in the project. While we are currently three to four weeks behind where our ideal schedule would have us to be, there are upcoming areas that I think we will be able to make up some lost time. The large amount of rain during the foundations and the recent flooding has been the major cause of the schedule delays, but we are working hard to get caught back up. Also, we are very close to our expected budget on this project thus far. While there have been minor unanticipated costs and savings throughout the job, there have been no major problems that would be a cause for concern.

Overall, the project is moving forward quickly and smoothly, and we look forward to continuing to work as hard as possible to build the best Church we can. As always, we appreciate the opportunity to be part of this exciting project.

Sincerely,
John H. Foshee

Letter From Building Project Chairman, Harold Albritton.

Dear Fellow Builders,

Things are moving on our Vaughn Road property - trees and dirt, that is.

In July, the Church signed a site preparation contract, in order to take advantage of the summer's dry weather. This will include the removal of trees, construction of a drainage pond, pre-foundation leveling and preparation of the building footprint, turn lane and driveway construction, and utilities. You will be happy to know that we will be able to preserve the Joshua Tree, so that it will continue to serve as a beautiful symbol for our Church.

A parish meeting is now being planned for the Sunday School hour on September 7th. At that time, the Building Committee will present a full report on the status of our building project, building design and timetable. We look forward to seeing you then.

As always, please keep everyone involved in this project in your prayers, as we continue on this exciting journey together.

In His Name,
Harold Albritton

Christchurch to Build on Vaughn Road

Things are now moving fast toward putting our new church into a new building!

On May 15, the Vestry approved the purchase of the 15-acre tract on Vaughn Road which has been the subject of our due diligence investigation for the last three months. And, Praise the Lord and thanks to the stewardship of some of our wonderful and faithful parishioners, the property will be bought without the necessity of borrowing. The purchase should be closed by early June.

This beautiful piece of land on Vaughn Road is located between Immanuel Presbyterian Church and Southern Homes and Gardens, just past the entrance to Wynlakes. If you have not already, drive out and take a look. During our due diligence period, the Montgomery Board of Adjustment granted our request for a variance to allow a church to be built on the property, and clear title in the seller was confirmed. Engineering studies, soil testing, and site preparation analysis were completed earlier this month, and a report of due diligence findings were made to the Site Committee. The Site Committee unanimously recommended that the site be purchased and, after considering all the due diligence findings, the Vestry agreed.

Throughout the due diligence period, the Building Committee has been meeting and working with our architect, Les Cole, on a master plan, a program of needs, and preliminary design considerations.

Now the design phase, with subcommittees, will begin in earnest, and you will be kept advised of its progress. A Capital Campaign is being planned for the fall.

As we move ahead toward establishing a new home, we ask for your prayers that all involved will continue to search for God’s will and that we will succeed.

In His Name,
Harold Albritton
